Les années 1952-1954 se caractérisent chez Jean-Paul Riopelle par une explosion des frontières de la peinture.
"La peinture de Riopelle est dynamique, bourgeonnante, elle déborde." Non seulement les frontières n'éxistent plus et les limites sont abolies mais la composition est totalement explosée.
"A l'école, on nous apprenait que l'horizon se mettait au tiers du tableau; mais dans la réalité, l'horizon se place n'importe où. "
Cette oeuvre de 1953 reflète les nouvelles préoccupations plastiques de l'artiste, son horreur du vide et du temps. La matière épaisse, travaillée au couteau, la gestualité des coups de pinceau, la diversité des touches et les aplaits de couleur rythment une nouvelle composition libérée aux horizons illimités.

The years 1952-1954 are characterized for Jean-Paul Riopelle by an explosion in the boundaries of painting.
'Riopelle's painting is dynamic, bourgeoning, in overflows.'
Not only have borders vanished and limits been abolished but the composition has completely burst open. 'At school, we taught that the horizon cuts across a third of the painting but in reality, the horizon can be anywhere.'

This work from 1953 reflects the painter's new artistic preoccupations, his horror of emptiness and time.
The thick material, worked with a knife, the movement of the brushstrokes, the range of touches and blocks of colours prepare the way for a liberated new composition with unlimited horizons.
