signed Corot (lower left) oil on canvas Embarkment scenes featured prominently in Corot's work from the 1860s. Paintings from this period brought Corot immense success, being greatly coveted by members of the bourgeoisie Second Empire. For these collectors, the pastoral landscape represented an escape from the duress and corruption of urban life. Corot's soft-focus landscapes were a retreat from the harsh, gritty boulevards which were beginning to traverse Paris. With these silvery feather-like landscapes, Corot created a new visual vocabulary for the arcadian landscape following a precedent set forth by artists such as Claude and Poussin. In many instances, these pastoral scenes also represented a retreat into the past for Corot; they were amalgams of previous journeys and specific places, and were more evocative of a feeling rather than a place. Yet, at the very moment when Corot revisited the past, the next generation of artists, the Impressionists, looked to him, and experimented with his techniques. This painting has been examined and authenticated by Martin Dieterle. Painted circa 1865-70
