NOTE
Corot is credited with being the progenitor of Impressionism. His plein-air method influenced Renoir, Monet, Sisley, Morisot and Pissarro -- all of whom either experimented with Corot's technique or called themselves his "pupils." By 1870, when Le Fagot Attendu was painted, Corot was at the height of his popularity and critical importance. His work was in great demand and his studio was always crowded with admiring critics, collectors, dealers and students. His paintings from this period were often given generalized titles, such as Le Fagot Attendu and his landscapes came to be known as "musings on nature." Stylistically, this is one of Corot's best loved periods. The landscape in Le Fagot Attendu is characterized by an open, light-filled composition. The colors are derived from a pale blue-grey palette with a silvery light. The subject never becomes a direct transcription of topography, but rather is an "effect" or "impression" of the scene. It was no accident that this painting was handled by the prominent art dealer, Durand-Ruel in 1872. Better known for his support of the Impressionists, Durand-Ruel would have recognized the same intrinsic qualities in Le Fagot Attendu.
