Description:

Signed A. Mercie and inscribed F. Barbedienne Fondeur Paris, the cast numbered 873, and with the Reduction Mecanique seal, the front with title Bronze, mid-brown patination heightened with gilding 93 cm (36 1/2 in) Mercie exhibited a full size plaster model of Gloria Victis at the Salon of 1874, where it won the Medaille d'Honneur. It was bought by the City of Paris, cast in bronze by the Thiebaut foundry and erected in the central courtyard at the Hotel de Ville. Bronze reductions of Gloria Victis were shown at the Exposition Universelle in 1878 manufactured by Barbedienne and became an instant classic.
