JAMES HARLAN, SECRETARY OF INTERIOR UNDER A. JOHNSON. Before and after his service he was a Senator from Iowa. He was a friend of Lincoln's, and his daughter married Robert Todd Lincoln. Walt Whitman was a clerk in his department, and Harlan had him fired: "Harlan had found a copy of Leaves of Grass on Whitman's desk as the poet was making revisions and found it to be morally offensive. 'I will not have the author of that book in this Department', he said. 'If the President of the United States should order his reinstatement, I would resign sooner than I would put him back.'" [Wickipedia entry] 8 ½ x 6 ½- inch albumen print, cut unevenly at the edges. Imprint of a previous oval mat. Mounted on a card with a wonderful advertisement for Wolcott's Instant Pain Annihilator (see website for image.) [3]
