*Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) portrait of an italian woman, said to be from frascati. Red chalk. The corners cut. 153 by 135mm. Provenance; Eugene David (L.839) and Jules David (L.1437); Roger Portalis (L.2232); Sale, Rouen, Etude Bisman, 20 October 1996. David spent five years in Rome between 1775 and 1782, during which time he is considered to have formulated his mature style. The present drawing, a delightful portrait of a young woman wearing earrings, and a fazzoletto (head-dress) in the Italian manner, still has echoes of the French taste for delicate, medallion-like portraits by artists such as Cochin.
