*Jacopo Tintoretto (1519-1594)
a male nude leaning on a rock looking upward.
Bears old attribution in pen and brown ink: G.Tintoretto.
Black chalk on blue paper.
387 by 223mm.
Provenance:
Sir Joshua Reynolds (L.2364).
Franz Koenigs owned around forty drawings by Jacopo Tintoretto and was clearly a keen admirer of the artist's work. He bought representative sheets, finding the majority of them from two sources: in 1926 from an album made around 1630/40 for the Milanese Count d' Adda and in 1928 from the heirs of the Roman art dealer and collector A. Simonetti. The old pen and ink attribution appears on several drawings by the artist, but the collector has not been yet identified.
