RED ON WHITE CIRCLE signed and dated "'61"; signed, titled, dated and inscribed "Toronto" on the reverse oil on canvas 177.2 by 204 cm. 69 3/4 by 80 1/4 in. In 1961 Bush was given his first solo exhibition in New York at the Robert Elkon Gallery and produced a body of work known as the 'Thrust' series. Characterized by their movement and fluidity, these were some of the first works in which the influence of Matisse became evident, as Bush rejected the assimilation of Cubist forms and geometry found in the work of many of his contemporaries. It is significant that the series developed from an earlier watercolour, Blue Thrust to Yellow from 1960, as it was these works on paper that Clement Greenberg had admired for their expressive simplicity.
