Description:

Portrait of the Painter Antti Faven signed in Cyrillic and dated 1922 (lower right) oil on canvas 25 5/8 x 213/4in. (65 x 55cm.) NOTES In 1864, Repin entered the Academy of Arts and graduated brilliantly in 1871. Between 1873 and 1876, he travelled extensively inside Europe and once back in Russia, he joined the Society of Peredvizhniki and in the eighties became its leading artist, the author of historical and genre compositions and a brilliant portraitist. The determining factor in Repin's work was his acute sense of contemporary life and by the nineties, he was rightly considered the leading Russian portraitist of his period. His best portraits are those of prominent figures in Russian society; writers, musicians, artists, scholars, but they also include many of his close friends. The portrait of his friend, the painter Antti Faven was painted when Repin settled in Finland after leaving Russia during the Revolution.
