(American 1853-1911) "BEATRIX AND ESMOND" signed "H. Pyle" bottom right, oil on canvas 31 1/2 x 21 in. (80 x 53.3 cm). Note: Pyle was commissioned by Harper & Brothers to produce five paintings all relating to the works of William Makepeace Thackeray. All five would be used as frontispieces in Harper's Monthly magazine and were effectively 'stand alone' artworks rather than illustrations. They were published between August, 1906 and July, 1911. The above painting, "Beatrix And Esmond", was published as the frontispiece of Harper's Monthly in August, 1906. In 1910, Harper & Brothers published a twenty-six volume set of "The Works of William Makepeace Thackeray." This painting was used as the frontispiece of volume ten. When Harper's announced their August 1906 issue of Harper's Monthly, they had this to say about "Beatrix and Esmond." "PICTURES FROM THACKERAY No. 1 By Howard Pyle" "This is the first of a number of paintings in full color which Mr. Pyle is making for the MAGAZINE. It illustrates Thackeray's masterpiece, "Henry Esmond" and portrays the hero of the story and the beautiful Beatrix. It is the most notable work of the greatest of our illustrators."
