SHEEP SHEARING - ILE D'ORLEANS signed and dated "1903"; titled and dated on several labels on the reverse oil on canvas 83.8 by 106.7 cm. 33 by 42 in. A 1903 article in the New York Times described the work: "Sheep Shearing is one of those statuesque groups that recall Jean François Millet not only by its subject and the class of people to which its figures belong, but also the peasants in the scene, the broad simple colours, and the feeling of actuality that is not realism, but borders on the romantic. Walker paints idylls of agricultural life on the Island of Orleans near Quebec, and in this sheep-shearing group, the intention is plain: to present the homely facts of country life with a sobriety, a dignity and often a bigness that raise the simple act to a high plane of feeling". This painting was in the important 1903 retrospective exhibit of Walker's paintings in New York City.
