NOTE
Abstossende Boote (Nidden) was painted in 1920, during Max Pechstein's last summer in Nidden, a village near the Baltic Sea. According to Max K. Pechstein, the present work is no. 12 from the series of paintings titled Fischerleben (the life of fishermen).
It was Nidden where Pechstein frequently returned to since 1909 and created some of his most important and well-known works. The themes of fishermen, ships and the sea are subject-matters that are recurring in the painter's ~uvre. His fascination with fishers can be traced back to his journey in 1913 and the time he spent in Monterosso al Mare. The strong waves and the fight of man with the elements are especially emphasised in the present work. Strong diagonals dominate the composition and give it a dynamic that marked the beginning of a new stylistic development in Pechstein's work.
