Henryk Siemiradzki (1843-1903) and workshop Water Carriers in an Antique Landscape with Olive Trees, inscribed H. Siemiradzki, Oil on canvas, 42 x 70 cm, the canvas doubled, framed, (Rei) Henryk Siemiradzki: He studied at the St. Petersburg Academy, and travelled in 1870 to France and Germany, where he halted in Munich in 1871 to study under Karl Theodor von Pilotys; he left in 1872 for Rome. His subjects were taken primarily from history and genre-paintings from ancient Greece and Rome, although sometimes also from the New Testament. He attempted to combine clarity and rich colour with precise reproductions of materials. He strove above all for a sensuous impression, heightened further by the play of sunlight.
