PROVENANCE

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 2 August 1951, lot 162 (one of a pair with a View of Naples), sold for 85 gns. to Appleby;
Anonymous sale, New York, Christie's, 12 January 1994, lot 126, for $95,000;
Anonymous sale, New York, Sotheby's, 25 May 2000, lot 71;
Acquired shortly afterwards by the present owner.

NOTE

This relatively early work was painted ten years before Van Lint became an official member of the Congregazione Artistica dei Virtuosi al Pantheon, and yet by the 1730s he had already made a name for himself painting vedute of buildings and monuments in and around Rome.

Although apparently unpublished, this veduta is taken from the same viewpoint as that of another painting by Van Lint, unsigned, previously with Agnew's in London (reproduced in colour in A. Busiri Vici, Peter, Hendrik e Giacomo van Lint, Rome 1987, p. 78, no. 63). A variant of these views, with a broader viewpoint and the inclusion of the left bank, signed and dated 1721, was sold in these rooms, 17 April 1996, lot 191 (reproduced in Busiri Vici, op. cit., p. 79, cat. no. 64). Busiri Vici (ibid.) refers to another view of the Ponte and Castel Sant'Angelo, also signed and with greater emphasis on the right side of the composition (as here), formerly with Jocelin Fielding Fine Art and published in 1977 in the catalogue of Italian views from Holkham Hall, no. 1 (apparently 55 by 106.5 cm.).
