HARVEY DUNN (American 1884 - 1952)
Neighbor Sam and the Lawman, 1942
Oil on canvas
26 x 40in.
Signed indistinctly lower right
The current owner has a charming anecdote about this superb painting: "Upon my father's death this painting passed to me. I used to visit Mr. Dunn on occasion in his Tenafly studio. He was genuinely friendly to a kid of sixteen, and he never let me feel in the way. We shot his .22 into the fireplace and on one occasion when I beat him he gave me the rifle. It may be the work was an illustration for a story by Howard Fast that appeared in theAmerican Magazine in March, 1942"
PROVENANCE:
Bought from Robert Dunn by Gene Geh, a student and friend of Dunn's, and then by descent to current owner
