Notes: In order to commemorate the Siege of Paris, the Municipal Council organised a competition for a monument. Doré submitted the plaster original of the present work, which figured in the Vente Dorée of 1885 (No.187) with the rights of reproduction. Cast in bronze in two sizes; this, the larger of the two versions, was exhibited in the Exposition Universelle of 1889.
