On wove paper. 45,2 x 31,5 cm (17,7 x 12,4 in), size of sheet. Study for the right figure on the oil painting Bewegtes Wasser, 1898. [AS] Provenienz: Private ownership. Ausstellung: Winnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg 1964, cat.no. 3 (with illustration). Fritz Novotny - Johannes Dobai, Gustav Klimt, Salzburg 1967, p. 307. While Gustav Klimt was working on the two murals with personifications of Philosophy and Medicine representing the philosophical and medical faculties in the ceremonial hall at Vienna University, he found time for several small Symbolist works which are closely linked with those monumental paintings. Our drawing is a study for one of those works, Bewegtes Wasser [Moving Water]. Here, in one of several sketches for it, the artist has prepared the nude that will later be depicted in the oil painting as floating in water. The elegant, elongated and delicately built figure has been laid down in just a few, assured strokes that demonstrate Gustav Klimt's consummate draughtsmanship. [AS] In very good condition.
