Das Bild "Frau mit Sonnenschirm" entstand während Giovanni Segantinis ~Savogniner Zeit" (1886-1894). In jenen Jahren schuf Segantini Hauptwerke wie die zweite Fassung von ~Ave Maria bei der Überfahrt" von 1886 (Otto Fischbacher, Giovanni Segantini Stiftung, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen) und ~Die bösen Mütter" von 1894 (Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien). In dieser sogenannten zweiten Schaffensperiode von Giovanni Segantini wurde die Palette farbenfroh. Der Maler studierte damals die Farbtheorie der Spätimpressionisten Frankreichs und entwickelte sich in der Farbe zum wichtigsten Vertreter des Divisionismus. Er malte seine Bilder im Freien, um die Natur bestmöglichst empfinden zu können, und um diese im klaren Alpenlicht möglichst genau wiedergeben zu können. Das vorliegende Gemälde zählt zu den Besten seiner Art. Bei der ~Frau mit Sonnenschirm" handelt es sich nach Angaben von Gottardo Segantini, Sohn des Malers, um seine Mutter.

The painting Woman with an umbrella originated during Segantini's "Savognin Time" (1886-1894). In these years Segantini created his main works such as the second version of "Ave Maria during her crossing" from 1886 (Otto Fischbacher, Giovanni Segantini foundation, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen) and " The ville mothers" of 1894 (Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna) In this second working phase of Segantini, he used more colours. The painter was back then studying the colour theory of the late impressionists in France and developed himself to the most important representative of the divisionsism in colour. He painted outside in order to be able to better reproduce nature and to use the benefits of the clear light of the Alps. The painting in the catalogue is one of his best ones. The woman on the painting seems to be the mother of Segantini's son Gottardo.
