1818. Holker came to the United States from France and during the Revolution was involved on behalf of the French Royal Marine and as consul. He was a major financial backer in a partnership with Robert Morris and others from New York and Boston, enabling the "Empress of China" to be the first American ship, sailing from New York in 1784, to reach Canton for trading purposes.
