signed Georges Binet (lower right)

oil on canvas

EXHIBITED

Paris, Salon, 1912, no. 174

NOTE

Painting both in Paris and in Normandy, Georges Binet captured scenes of modern, everyday life. Flower Market combines bright blooms and a sense of urban bustle for a dynamic and highly evocative composition. The beauty of the flowers on tantalizing offer, as well as of the seller carefully tending to her charges and the smartly-dressed shoppers beyond, draws the eye into this compelling composition.
A smaller version was included in the exhibition George S Binet, Musée Eugène Boudin, Honfleur, April 24 to June 21 1999, no. 33, (illustrated p. 21) and titled "Le Havre, Marché aux fleurs, Place Gambetta".
