*GEORGE STUBBS, A.R.A. (BRITISH, 1724-1806) MR. OGILVY'S TRENTHAM WITH WILLIAM SOUTH UP AT NEWMARKET signed and dated Geo.Stubbs pinxit 1771 (lower right) oil on canvas 40 by 50 in. 101.6 by 127 cm. Bred and owned by Charles Ogilvy whose harlequin silks are worn by the jockey William South, Trentham was by Lord Gower's Sweepstakes out of Miss South. He won numerous races and was sold in 1771 to Patrick Blake for POUND1575. He won eleven races without losing a match. In 1772, he was acquired by Charles James Fox and Thomas, Lord Foley. He won two Jockey Club Plates in 1772 and 1776 and a total of POUND8450 before being retired to Lord Egremont's stud at Petworth. Interestingly, the print by Stubbs' son published after this painting contains an advertisement for Sweepstakes, Trentham's sire, owned Sir Laurance Dundas of Moor Park, indicating that the engraving was produced to publicize the stallion.
