Little Girl in Top Hat inscribed with title on the stretcher oil on canvas 20 x 16 in. (50.8 x 40.6 cm.) PROVENANCE The artist. Will Luks, brother of the artist. Caroline Luks, daughter of the above. Gallery, Retrospective Exhibition, 1967 (This exhibition also traveled to Montclair, New Jersey, Montclair Museum; Trenton, New Jersey, Trenton Museum) New York, Owen Gallery, George Luks: An Artistic Legacy, October-December 1997, no. 2, illustrated San Francisco, California, George Krevsky Gallery, Ash-Can School Show, March-May 1999 NOTES A member of The Eight, a group of American painters who rejected the traditional teachings of the National Academy of Design in New York, Luks was a true Modernist whose rapid brush captured his subjects with a combined sense of humanity and a sly sense of humor. Luks enjoyed painting children and often revealed their struggle and hope within his portraits. Little Girl in Top Hat is a sensitive portrait, most likely of a street urchin, whose deep eyes belie sadness beyond her young years. However with his rich, warm palette, Luks portrays the little sitter with a slight smile that glows with optimism and promise.
