GEORGE DAWE. (British, 1781-1829). GENTLEMAN AND LADY WITH A BOOK - A PAIR, Oil on canvas. - 50 1/2 in. x 40 in.; 52 in. x 41 3/4 in.

George Dawe was awarded the Royal Academy's gold medal in 1803 and won the premium when he later exhibited at the British Institution. He was commissioned by the Emperor of Russia to paint portraits of prominent officers. After nine years in Russia he had painted over 400 portraits which are on display in The Hermitage.
