1611. DANIEL CHESTER FRENCH (1830-1931) American sculptor of the seated figure of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial, and of "The Minute Man" at Concord. Fine content A.L.S. "Daniel C. French" 3pp. 8vo., Paris, Dec. 20, 1886, to Mr. Hutchins, in part: "...I wish I could have you come to Washington as you desire, but it was impossible. What have you decided to do about the Franklin? There is no danger that I shall forget the Webster. I wish I could see it in my mind's eye in a satisfactory form. I have not felt equal to the task so far. To be good at all, it must be very good, for the aim is far beyond a mere portrait statue and anything short of a great excellence would be utter failure. I am indebted to you for the handsome notice you wrote for the Post on the Cass [?] statue. That gentleman has increased in stature to 7 feet and stands in my excellent studio...in a state of nature. He will begin to own clothes in a few days...". Penned on both sides of a single sheet which has had crease reinforced with archival tale. File hopes at top, otherwise very good condition. $200-300
