CATALOGUE NOTE

In 1911 Fred Hall moved to Hill Cottage in Speen, near Newbury where he lived for the rest of his life contentedly painting idyllic scenes of rural life, often focused on livestock and their drovers. By this time in his life, most connections with Newlyn had been severed but he retained his interest in plein-air painting. In the farmyard close to Hill Cottage, Hall built a studio in which to paint and he also used the yard itself in the summer as an open-air studio. Hall often chose titles which suggest a particular light effect upon the landscape, such as Noonday, Evening in September or Autumn Sunrise.

Dimensions: 96.5 by 185.5 cm., 38 by 73 in.
