FREDERICK A. BUTMAN
American, 1820-1871

Mountain landscape. Signed and dated lower right "F.A. Butman 1868". Cataloger's Note:

We believe that the subject of the painting is
Mount Washington in New Hampshire's White Mountains. The mountain and peak bears a striking resemblance to Washington, although we have been unable to place the foreground.

In 1866 Butman returned to the East Coast after painting for nearly a decade in the Western Frontier to both critacal acclaim and commercial success. According the the 2007 exhibition, "Consumuing Views," produced by the New Hampshire Historical Society, Butman painted his first known paintings of the White Mountains in 1868..

Provenance:
Private Collection, Fall River, MA
Private Collection, Texas (by descent)

Oil on canvas, 26" x 45". Housed in its original gilt frame.

Estimated Price:    $
