Painted in 1902 PROVENANCE Sotheby's Munich, Anon. sale, 3 December 1996, lot 209. LITERATURE H. Voss, Franz von Stuck 1863-1928 Werkkatalog der Gem„lde mit einer Einf쳌hrung in seinen Symbolismus, Munich, 1973, no. 241/338 (illustrated p. 151). NOTES Stuck painted very few animal portraits, but he did on occasion depict the family pets in his work. This full-scale portrait of 'Pips' is the first such depiction of one of the earliest family pets to inhabit the Villa Stuck.
