Notes:
The Darwin D. Martin House windows have long been celebrated for their beauty as well as for their important place among window designs executed by Frank Lloyd Wright himself. This extraordinary casement window features a vertical pendant chevron motif placed to the left which is masterfully articulated in iridized glass. The chevron?a recurring device in Wright's window commissions?is similarly employed in the Martin House "Tree of Life" series and various windows designed for the Susan Lawrence Dana House. Wright utilized these casements windows in pairs throughout the first-floor interior of the Martin House, where they were installed within large freestanding heating piers that served as room dividers. All of these interior casement windows, including the example offered here, were removed from the Martin House in the late 1950s and presently reside in private and museum collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Rhode Island School of Design Museum and the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University. Those originally installed in the exterior walls of the house still remain intact.
Sotheby's would like to thank Julie L. Sloan for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
