Notes: The pre-eminent Romantic sculptor in France, Rude is known for his heroic celebrations of both the Revolution (La Marseillaise, on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris) and the Napoleonic era ("Napoleon Awakening," in Fixin). The subject of this spirited posthumous portrait, Gaspard Monge, Comte de Péluse (1746 -1818), was a distinguished French mathematician, who served both the Revolution (he set up a school to train engineers for the revolutionary army) and Napoleon. Like Rude, Monge was Burgundian by birth.
