Portrait of the clipper ship "Norway" of New York in a storm. Titled on reverse "Ship 'Norway' passing Sandy Hook, E.N.E. Gale Nov. 28, 1862." She was built in 1869 by Trask & Dearborn and was 210' long. On the return passage of her maiden voyage she loaded 1,037 Chinese coolies at Macao to transport to Havana, and upon arrival reported that a mutiny had developed among her "human freight" at sea with the result then there had been battles aboard for control of the ship and suffered a mortality of 137 coolies. Signed lower right "Conrad Freitag 260 No. 7th St. Brooklyn E.D. N.Y." Conrad Freitag (American, 1845-1895). Freitag was enlisted in the Civil War in 1862, wounded in 1863, and mustered out in 1865.
