The present drawing appears to be an autograph tracing of the cartoon for part of the apse window in Holy Trinity Church, Meole Brace, Shropshire, illustrated in F.M. Hueffer, Ford Madox Brown: A Record of his Life and Work, London, 1896, facing p. 183. Designed in 1869 and made by Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. in 1870, the window is illustrated in Sewter's monograph, vol. I, pl. 309-11. Brown's cartoon for another section, The Sacrifice of Zacharias, was sold in these rooms on 15 October 1992, lot 8. He designed seven of the nine Old Testament subjects in the window, the other two being the work of Burne-Jones.
We are grateful to Peter Cormack, F.S.A., Deputy Keeper of the William Morris Gallery, for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
