Condition: The wood panel was constructed with three vertical planks each of which has a vertical convex warp. The planks are separated on the reverse and have been repaired with oakum and glue and stabilized with three horizontal battens. There are vertical strips of discolored retouching on the recto along plank edges. There are three areas of paint loss in the lower left quadrant with associated active cleavage radiating from the losses. The losses and cleavage appear to be in areas of old repairs as opposed to original paint. There are other scattered areas of discolored retouching. The gilding in the background appears to have been regilt with metal leaf as indicated by the large size of the leaves. There are scattered gilding losses on the engaged frame. The varnish is strongly darkened and discolored. It appears to be a natural resin varnish under UV illumination.
