Field, Eugene. The House. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1896. 16mo in green cloth boards, gilt front, spine and top page edges, 268pp. Tipped in note 3.5 x 4.5 in., Chicago, Nov. 27th, 1893. Written on the inside of an envelope addressed to Fields, as he points out in the note: Good God, my child, do you fancy I'm a millionaire? That book is not for you; neither is the portrait. You just get them autographed and embellished and pack them back to me as quick as you know how. The thought of this narrow escape makes me sweat blood like a behemoth! Please see the back of this paper. Better address your letters to Buena Park, simply. We have a country post office and no carrier system out here. I am gaining slowly. On Thanksgiving I go down to ??? for the first time. Give my love to the lady who sits in two chairs and to the one who has red cheeks and loves to read Eugene's fine Italian hand. Lovingly, Pleuropneumoniac 'Geno.
