Description: This is a fine example of cased pair of English made traveling pistols which were converted from flintlock to percussion in the mid 19th century. The brown finished barrel is marked "- -NEWCASTLE- -" on the top flat near the breech end with two "Crown/crossed saber" British proofs stamped on the left flat. The lock plate, hammer and tang are casehardened. The center of the lock plate is marked "JOHNSON". The hammer, rear of the lock plate, safety, tang and breech end of the barrel are lightly but nicely engraved. The trigger guard is blue and has also been engraved with a pineapple like engraved fininal. Ebony end tip, with a mahogany ramrod with a brass tip. The ram rod rings are silver. The grip stock is one piece smooth walnut with a round butt. The pistols are accompanied by a large walnut case which measures 18"X9-1/4" with brass mounted hardware and carrying handle in the center of the lid. The green felt lined case host a full compliment of accessories including a cleaning rod, nipple wrench, powder flask, cap tin, bullet mold and some loose balls.

Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains much of the brown finish (applied at time of conversion) exhibiting a few patches of isolated pin prick pitting and some overall spotting. The hammer, tang and lock plate display wonderful, original case colors vivid and deep. The silver plated ram rod ring have aged to a pleasant dark patina. The trigger guard retains 98% plus original blue finish with only some very slight spotting. The wood is very fine with only minor pressure marks from storage concentrated on the wood face opposite the lock plate. All edges are sharp. All markings are clear. The case is good showing a crack across the length of the lid and some pressure marks and scuffs. The interior of the case has been relined and new wood compartments added. The bullet mold is cleaned to a bright gray patina all other accessories are very fine condition. Over all an attractive set of English traveling pistols in fine condition.

The casehardened lock plate, hammer and tang show vibrant original case colors thinning on exposed points. The silver plated ram rod rings have pleasantly aged to a dark patina. The trigger guard retains 98% original blue finish. The wood is very fine plus with only very minor marks from storage. All edges are clean and sharp with wonderful feathering on the grip. A very fine attractive English case set.
