Robaut, L'Oeuvre complet d'Eugene Delacroix, Paris 1885, p.115, cat.426, illus. Like many of his oriental scenes, this watercolor was painted almost two years after Delacroix's return to Paris from Morocco. Having sketched furiously in notebooks during his travels, he gladly used this material as the foundation both for the subject-matter and for the intense colors of his later work. Lee Johnson, who confirmed the authenticity of this drawing, notes that the voyage to Morocco in 1832 had the greatest influence on his art and could be considered the equivalent of the apprenticeships in Rome which other of his more classically inclined contemporaries undertook (see Delacroix, le Voyage au Maroc, exh. cat., Paris, Institut du Monde Arabe, 1994, pp.114-125). The inscription: tres brillant.. presumably refers to the coloration of the figure's costume, rather than indicating, as has previously been suggested, that Delacroix was especially pleased with the drawing. *Ferdinand-Victor-Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863)
