PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION

JACOB WARTFELD

52 by 37cm., 20½ by 14½in.

signed and dated Waldmüller 1833. u.r.

oil on canvas

PROVENANCE

Theodor Breuer, Vienna
Private Collection, Shanghai
Sale: Dorotheum, Vienna, 4 December 1973, lot 144

LITERATURE

Bruno Grimschitz, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Salzburg, 1957, p. 306, no. 330, catalogued; pl. 27, illustrated (showing the sitter with an altered hair style added by another hand)
Rupert Feuchtmüller, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Vienna, 1996, p. 454, no. 367, catalogued and illustrated (showing the sitter with an altered hair style added by another hand)

NOTE

Both Grimschitz and Feuchtmüller illustrate the present work with the sitter sporting an apocryphal, more youthful hairstyle. Whoever added the hairstyle also covered the artist's signature, leaving only the W showing. The overpainting must have been removed and the painting returned to its present original state after 1973, since the Dorotheum catalogue of that year describes the work as being signed and dated W. 1833 and refers to the sitter's hair having been added by another hand.
