STUDY FOR THE HEAD OF THE ANGEL GABRIEL

measurements note
14 1/4 by 11 1/4 in.; 36.1 by 28.5 cm.

oil on canvas

NOTE

We are grateful to Edmund T. Pillsbury who, based on first hand inspection, confirms this painting to be by Barocci. He also notes that our picture is probably an oil study for the head of the angel Gabriel in Barocci's Annunciation (Vatican, Rome). That composition was painted for Duke Francesco Maria II in 1582-84 to decorate his chapel in the basilica at Loreto. It was moved to Paris in 1797 during the Napoleonic campaigns and finally returned to Italy in 1815.

It is also interesting to note the similarity in handling and perspective to another oil study of Saint Elizabeth in the Metropolitan Museum, New York. Both the present sketch and the Metropolitan Museum composition have the same warm mottled surface and unusual perspective.
