Notes: The present work demonstrates Van Rysselberghe's mastery of the Divisionist technique pioneered by Georges Seurat during the late-1880s.
After Seurat's premature death in 1891, the artist steadily replaced his methodical application of paint with a more intuitive approach, indebted equally to Impressionism. His coastal views offer a stunning representation of water, where the interplay of colours creates a vibrating luminosity.
