NOTE
Painted circa 1911 from a commanding position overlooking terraced fields near Sa Coma on Mallorca's east coast, this light-filled painting shows Rusiñol at his peak as a landscape painter.
A founding member of Els Quatre Gats in Barcelona, Rusiñol travelled widely and spent extended periods in Paris. It was on Mallorca however, away from the clamour of the metropolis, that he was able to explore the full range of his resonant palette and where many of his most powerful and evocative works were completed.
Rusiñol's deep fascination for Mallorca endured throughout his life. First attracted to the island in 1893, Rusiñol visited again in the summer of 1899 to convalesce from ill health. He then returned to the island regularly, exploring every corner of its luminous landscape. He referred to Mallorca as the 'island of tranquility', the title of his 1922 book about the island, and the oils that Rusiñol painted there rank among the most serene works in his oeuvre.
In 1902 he exhibited a selection of his Mallorcan canvases at the Casino La Unión de Sollér, and in 1903 and 1905 at Sala Parés in Barcelona. To acknowledge Rusiñol's achievements on the island, and in recognition of the importance that he attached to Mallorca as a source of inspiration for some of his most striking images, in 1935 the city of Palma dedicated a monument to his memory.
Another version of this painting, dated 1911, is recorded in José de C. Laplana, Santiago Rusiñol, El Pintor, l´Home, Barcelona, 2004, p. 142, no. 15.4.17 (fig. 1).
