CATALOGUE NOTE

Johan Barthold Jongkind spent his childhood in Vlaardingen and Maassluis, situated along the river Meuse. In 1837 he started to attend the Drawing Academy of The Hague, where he was taught by the famous landscapist Andreas Schelfhout. In 1845 Eugène Isabey payed Jongkind a visit in The Hague and invited him to become his student in Paris. Supported by an allowance which was granted by King William III, Jongkind left for Paris in March 1846. Jongkind became friends with many artists, among which Francois Edouard Picot, William Adolphe Bouguereau, Gustave Courbet and Felix Ziem. In 1848 he exhibited for the first time at the Paris Salon, where his work didn't remain unnoticed. A rather prolonged journey to Normandy brought him to Honfleur, Fécamp, Yport and Saint-Valéry-en-Caux. In 1852 his work was honoured with a medal at the Paris Salon.

In November 1855 Jongkind returned to his native country and settled for five years in Rotterdam. He stayed in frequent contact with his art dealer Father Martin in France, regularly dispatching paintings to Paris. Jongkind also kept exhibiting his work in France, in Dijon (1858) and at the Paris Salon (1859). In the course of the year 1860 Jongkind returned to France, where he would spend the rest of his life.

The present lot was executed in 1856, the second year of his five year sojourn in Holland. In a colourful style, Jongkind depicts a typical view of Holland with figures near a windmill, a subject he painted more often, but seldom as brilliantly executed as the present lot. The bright sunlight touches the landscape and the figures, suggesting the early hours of a warm summer day. The slender proportions of the windmill stand out as a strong vertical accent in the flat Dutch countryside.
