Notes: Inspired by Monet's 1890s series depicting poplar trees beside the river Epte, Loiseau explored the waterways near his Normandy home at Saint-Cyr-du-Vaudreuil. This painting comes from an important series, which examines the flow and banks of the Eure under varying atmospheric conditions. While in these works the artist makes plain his debt to Monet, a forceful imagination and facility is also manifest.
Much of Loiseau's power derives from his subtlety as a colourist. Brouillard, effet du matin (Eure) features the muted, exquisitely nuanced tones that typify his finest works: shades of mauve, cool green and blue give an ethereal magic to the early-morning mist.
