CATALOGUE NOTE
Although no exact date is known for Hunter's first visit to the South of France, it is likely that it was towards the end of 1926. He rented a small studio adjacent to the Auberge de la Colombe d'Or in the small village of St-Paul-de-Vence. He travelled around the Riviera on this trip and subsequent visits in 1927 and 1928, painting at Marseilles, Antibes, Toulon, Juan-les-Pins and St Tropez.
Cassis was a much loved holiday destination for all four Scottish Colourists as well as other artists including André Derain and Raoul Dufy. Hunter had painted extensively on the French Riviera but only a handful of views of Cassis are known, the present view being a rare oil. The pen and coloured ink drawings View from a Café, Cassis Balcony, A Balcony with a Sea View, The Café, Cassis and Boats in the Harbour, Cassis, were drawn from Hunter's hotel room in Cassis and from a small cafe on the sea front. The prominent landmark visible in The Pool, Cassis is the stone lighthouse which can also be seen through the French windows in another ink and pastel drawing, entitled Café, Cassis. It is likely that the oil painting now titled Mediterranean Harbour (sold in these rooms, 23 March 1993, lot 241) also depicts Cassis, painted from further around the coast and depicting the same distinctive hillside behind the town.
