This is an excellent example of a Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle that was manufactured in 1883. The rifle has a blued barrel, magazine, forearm cap and receiver. The hammer, loading lever and buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The rifle has a varnished walnut forearm. The rifle has a round barrel with full-length magazine. The barrel is fitted with the standard fixed blade, nickel-silver, front sight and folding, adjustable leaf rear sight. The third pattern receiver has an integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The rifle has the final pattern safety with the sear block depressed by the lever. The crescent steel buttplate has a sliding brass trap. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING'S - IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16.1860." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber, "45-60" is stamped on the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator. The upper receiver tang has a threaded hole for a tang sight and is roll stamped with the late marking: "{MODEL 1876}" with foliate decorations at either end. The serial number, "49991" is located on the lower tang behind the loading lever latch.
