This is an excellent example of an engraved Peabody-Martini What Cheer long range target rifle manufactured circa 1860s to 1880s. This rifle has a blue part octagon barrel and casehardened action, breech block, trigger guard, lever and niter blue buttplate. The action is engraved with broad floral scroll patterns with a scene of two hunting dogs chasing two stags on the left side, a tigers head flanked by an eagle and hound heads on the right side. The top of the action is engraved "What Cheer". The top barrel flat is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. PROVIDENCE R.I. U.S.A." and the trigger guard is marked "PEABODY & MARTINI PATENTS". There is a 1 inch wedge of scroll engraving on each barrel flat at the breech end and a small wedge of the same pattern on the front of the lever. The front sight has been removed, however the base remains. There are no provisions for a rear sight on the barrel and there is a long range tang mounted peep sight. The trigger is checkered and the rifle is mounted with a checkered forearm with iron end cap and straight grip stock with iron buttplate with a sight base mounted on the tang.
