Evelyn de Morgan studied at the Slade school, famed for its emphasis on life-drawing. Her drawings combine the sense of animated movement derived from figure study with a serene classicism which reflects the teaching of Edward J. Poynter (see lot 32). De Morgan produced numerous studies for her paintings, however tantalisingly it has not been possible to identify the present drawing with a particular work.
Provenance:
with J.S. Maas, London, where purchased by the present owner.
Exhibited:
Springfield, 1988, no. 46.
Newhaven, 1994.
