signed oil on canvas 79 by 54 in. 200.7 by 137.2 cm. Painted circa 1868, this relates to the painting called Centaures, exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1868, now in the Collection of the Musee du Petit Palais, Paris, and described by Louis Gonse as Fromentin's most discussed painting. The present work, together with Fromentin's Diane au bain (now lost), was painted as part of a series of decorative panels commissioned by Prince Paul Demidoff.
