Condition/Details: Bound in light blue cloth with bright silver lettering to spine, this volume is a scarce original edition of this signature work by Ernest Hemingway. This novella was written in Cuba in 1951 and published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime. One of his most famous works, it centers upon Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. It is noteworthy in twentieth century fiction, reaffirming Hemingway's worldwide literary prominence as well as being a significant factor in his selection for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. The author claimed this to be his best work. It received the Pulitzer Prize in May 1952.
This is a first printing with letter A and Scribner's seal on copyright page. The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean pages. Intact pictorial dustjacket with original price of $3.00 is in mylar cover. The book measures approximately 6" x 8 1/2" and contains 140 pages.
