Erich Heckel (1883 Döbeln/Sachsen - 1970 Radolfzell/Bodensee). Frauen am Ufer. 1927 Watercolour , gouache and chalk. Signed, dated and titled lower left. On laid paper primed grey. 69 x 55 cm (27,1 x 21,6 in), the full sheet. Expertise: We are grateful to Hans Geißler, estate Erich Heckel, Hemmenhofen / Lake Constance for his help in cataloguing this lot Provenienz: Private collection South Germany. From the days he spent his summers on the Baltic and the studies he did with Pechstein and E. L. Kirchner on the Moritzburg Lakes, Erich Heckel continued to return to the motif of bathing nudes near water. By the late 1920s, however, the expressive colours of the early years and the social criticism of the Great War and the post-war years had disappeared. Heckel had found idyllic serenity. A moderate palette with extensive drawing ties this composition into an overarching harmony. [KD]In good condition, colours still fresh. Fine trace of rubbing on the lower right third, small rubbing on the upper margin. Upper right corner with barely noticeable crease mark. A few tiny colour stains (original?) near the signature.
