NOTE
This watercolour relates closely to an oil painting of 1912 entitled Leigende Frau (see: Paul Vogt, Erich Heckel, Recklinghausen, 1965, no. 1912/1, fig. 1). It is one of a series of works depicting lying and resting models executed between 1911 and 1912. The present composition depicts the artist's wife Sidi, lying in Heckel's atelier.
Heckel's participation at the famous Sonderbund exhibition in Cologne and the important Brücke exhibition at the Galerie Arnold in Dresden in 1910 was a major milestone in his artistic development. That same year, Heckel met the dancer Milda Georgi, known as Sidi, who became his wife in 1915, when Heckel was a medical orderly in Flanders during the First World War.
