Mournful Lute Player", 1859, 16" x 20" oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right. Leutz was German born but brought up in Philadelphia, PA. In the early 1830's he studied at the school of portraitist John Rubens Smith in Philadelphia. He returned to Europe in 1840 to study and stayed 20 years in Dusseldorf. He came back to America to paint the "Westward the Course of Empire" in the House of Representatives and the American icon "Washington Crossing the Delaware". A letter from the artist to Albert Bierstadt captioned "Dusselforf, Augst. 1st 1858" discussing the sale of another work of art is included with this lot.
